Newcastle has a range of city twinning and partnerships with cities in different parts of the world.

In Europe – Bergen in Norway; Gelsenkirchen in Germany; Groningen in the Netherlands; Nancy in France and Malmo in Sweden.

The rest of the World – Atlanta and Little Rock in the United States; Haifa in Israel; Newcastle NSW in Australia and two cities Taiyuan and Zhengzhou in China.

For more details of the history of these relationships see the Lord Mayor’s section of the Newcastle City Council website.

International Newcastle helps the City Council to make the best of these unique relationships. Examples of the kind of things going on the moment are listed below.

We met representatives of the US Sister Cities movement last year and we are developing our ‘Our Place’ project based upon a model used in Atlanta to facilitate social interactions between international visitors.

Following the ‘Christmas tree visit’ visit of the Mayor of Bergen in December, we have been working with council officers to look at ways in which we can stimulate and support more social interactions between the people of our two cities.

At the end of 2011, we organised a group of local drummers to take part in Nancy’s Christmas Celebrations. We are working with the Honorary French Consul, the Council and Newcastle University to see if we can organise a system for regular exchange of student internships between the cities.
